Home office ideas/1: the trestle desk
By Suze on Sep 19, 2011 | In About Me, Home Decor, The Blue House
Hello friends and welcome to a new week!
For me it will be dedicated - among a zillion of other work related things - to my home.
Finally we chose a bookcase for the living room (actually I'd better say I've won the bookcase war...), I love it and it was the less expensive we saw, and it will be delivered in these days. And also another little piece of furniture for the living room will come in. And you know what this means? That I will be able to unpack from cardboard boxes at least part of the books, still there since the moving! And that I will free storage space in the kitchen so no more mess on the kitchen counter top spaces! Yay!
More important, with the baby coming I'll have to move in a different room and completely reorganize my home office and I will need your help and suggestions for sure.
After long deliberation, we have decided the baby's room will be the one that is probably my favorite in the home. Not the biggest of the two available and unfortunately the less light-inundated of the home but the cutest because of the lovely gambriel roof. This room will be solely THE baby's room as needed, while my studio will move in the biggest one that currently works as: wardrobe with our big closet, guest room with sofa-bed, music room, ironing room, deposit, currently known as "the Ikea room" or "the ugly room". :) Not that it's ugly in itself! On the contrary it's gorgeously lit, with a huge window and pretty spacious. It's just that so far has been very neglected in terms of furniture and decor...

Anyway, as first step I need to buy a new desk, so I can get rid somehow of the huge thrifted one I have now and I don't like and easily move my computer and stuff. The most important thing is that the new desk must fit TWO workstations (mine with two monitors) besides the printer, the music mixer of my man and other hardware stuff. And it cannot be too "girly" since I'll share it with my man (although he doesn't work from home but only uses the computer for fun and for music).

So to save space my idea is to go for one long trestle desk (around 2.5 meters, taking a whole wall and ideally making an angle too, with a small part of the top going under the window) in a combination of natural wood and white or maybe metal. What do you think?

My first idea to find what I'm looking for was calling a carpenter. It seemed an easy piece to create and I thought it should be not very expensive but unfortunately 2 weeks have passed since the guy came to have a look and get the measurements and still he didn't call back with an approximate quote, so I'm afraid it's not going to be quick enough...

But I'm sure I can find a simple desk as I want it in stores. My first stop this week will be Ikea (again!) but if you have other suggestions they're more than welcome! Too much Ikea stuff is killing me! :)

Tomorrow I'll show you also some storage ideas I have for this new space... I'm also working to a little photo-wall project I'm looking forward to share with you. And very soon the most beautiful baby crib EVER: the one that was my brother's and mine renovated by my mum and a friend.
