Special bouquets: aromatic herbs from our garden
By Suze on Jul 12, 2011 | In About Me, Home Decor, Free!
Hello friends!
After finally posting yesterday a little giveaway I had planned since a while (have a look if you still didn't), today I want to share a little glimpse of my weekend.
Last sunday there was a small rustic family lunch at my parents' house on the hills near to Parma. I commited to prepare my famous focaccia (see the recipe here!) and I also wanted to bring something cute as "favor" for my mum and my boyfriend's mum, but I really didn't have time to prepare anything in advance.

So, on sunday morning, inspired also by the menu for the lunch based on barbecue (love it!), I've decided to pick and arrange the aromatic herbs that are growing so beautifully in our garden. I've added some spikes from our amazing bushes of lavender almost in full bloom (it's incredible how big they are considering they were planted just 8 months ago! I promise to take pictures before I "harvest" them in a week or so).

I can assure you that the smell of the bouquets was divine and miles away from the "kitchen" feeling effect that I was fearing.
Like the idea? Here's some DIY suggestion then!

First of all I've sorted the herbs to make two identical bouquets. I'm not particularly expert at flowers arranging but I've tried to put the tallest stems (rosemary, lavender) together on the back of the composition and the shortest on the front, sourrounded by the big leaves of the sage.

I've used rubber bands to secure the bouquets.

I've added some scraps of cotton ribbon (leftover from a birthday package I think...). I think that ribbon and other embellishments for this type of bouquet should be shabby looking and kind of country and rustic, so I'd suggest cotton, grosgrain, burlap, twine (I'd avoid satin, tulle, silk, glitter and such... Although actually a very well balanced contrast could give interesting results...)

Final touch: I've added twine and my free printable "home made" tags that you can download right here!
But you could add manila tags (for example my free printable doily ones maybe?), kraft paper decor, paper doilies, old books pages and many other decorations.
*Total cost of this little project: zero. And all the herbs can easily be grown in an urban garden or on a balcony or even indoor I think.
*Time spent: not more than 20' (I told you I was late and had small time...)
Of course the herbs can then be totally used for cooking and can be dried to last longer, but the bouquet is also pretty sweet to look at, don't you agree?
Too bad I didn't have time to also prepare matching boutonnières for the "boys" (not that they actually had buttonholes to secure a boutonnière to last sunday, considering that my dad was already barechested at the barbecue when we arrived, just to give you the idea of the athmosphere...) :)
Do you grow aromatic herbs in your gardens or balconies? What's your favorite? I'd love to hear!
