Beautiful Today: Lea Stein plastic brooches
By Suze on Oct 23, 2009 | In Beautiful Today, About Me, Fashion & Style | 1 feedback »

This fox comes in dozens colors and patterns and it's probably the most famous design of Lea Stein (1931 -), celebrated French plastic jewelry artist.
Lea Stein was introduced to me by my friend Serena. While at university, for years we've both been working periodically as "booth assistant" for an important antiques fair (that was fun!). We've seen so many of these, collectors love them and Serena has always been drooling over Lea Stein brooches.
In fact, some of these whimsical, over-sized, Art Deco inspired brooches are real masterpieces.

Corolle

Lea Stein started working with plastic around 1965. Her husband was a chemist and they developed a long and sofisticated process of layering sheets of plastic, bake them, cool down and then cut into shapes. This process allows to endless combinations of colors and textures, also inserting fabrics and rhinestones. Each piece is unique! And there's so many different animals, people, objects Lea Stein got inspiration from that you could get lost!
Buba

Lea Stein brooches are not very expensive. If you want one, a part from trying at vintage collectors fairs and antiques markets, you can find many sellers on eBay (beware of the "fakes"!) or check out the beautiful large collections at:

Le spille di Lea Stein esprimono la raffinata eleganza dell'Art Déco: spirito, charme, policromia. Sempre splendide con quella loro deliziosa grazia fiabesca.
